AWS Fargate Pricing

Fargate bills the vCPU and memory each task asks for, by the second, and there are no instances to run. In us-east-1, Linux x86 is $0.04048 per vCPU-hour and $0.004445 per GB-hour. Graviton is about 20% cheaper, and Windows adds a $0.0460 per vCPU-hour licence.

Alternatives to Fargate

OptionPrice vs FargateWhy look at it
Fargate on Graviton (ARM)
-20%-$0.0197/hr
one 2 vCPU, 4 GB task, us-east-1
Lower vCPU and GB rates for the same task. Needs arm64 container images.
ECS on EC2 (c6i.large)Compare →
-14%-$0.0137/hr
one whole node, same 2 vCPU / 4 GiB shape
Cheaper per vCPU when you keep the node full. You run, patch and scale the instances.
ECS Managed Instances (c6i.large)
-4%-$0.0035/hr
one whole node, same 2 vCPU / 4 GiB shape
AWS runs the node for you, for a fee on top of EC2. You still pay for the whole node, used or not.
Amazon EKS with Fargate podsSame Fargate rates plus a cluster feeKubernetes scheduling on the same per-vCPU and per-GB rates, plus the EKS cluster fee.

What to know about AWS Fargate

Serverless containers for ECS and EKS, billed per vCPU-hour and GB-hour for the size each task requests.

Fargate removes the node. You tell ECS or EKS how much vCPU and memory a task needs, and AWS bills that size for as long as the task runs.

There are three platforms. Linux on x86 is the baseline. Linux on Graviton uses lower vCPU and memory rates, about 20% lower per vCPU in us-east-1, in exchange for building your images for arm64. Windows is priced as three rates added together: vCPU, memory, and a separate licence fee per vCPU. The licence is about the same size as the vCPU charge, so it roughly doubles that line.

Rates differ by region. The table on this page lists every region, including the ones where Windows is not offered.

Fargate versus EC2 comes down to how full you keep a node. A task that uses a whole node’s worth of CPU and memory all month is usually cheaper on EC2. A workload that runs part of the day, or that would leave most of an instance idle, is usually cheaper on Fargate because you stop paying when the task stops.

This page shows on-demand rates only. Fargate Spot and Compute Savings Plans rates are not in the price list we read. A Compute Savings Plan can discount the vCPU and memory lines.

Good for

  • Spiky or small workloads where idle instances would be wasted
  • Teams that do not want to patch or scale nodes
  • Batch and scheduled jobs that run for minutes

Watch for

  • You pay for the task size you request, not what the container uses
  • Steady, full-node workloads are usually cheaper on EC2
  • Windows adds a licence fee per vCPU on top of the vCPU and memory rates
  • Ephemeral storage beyond the included 20 GB is billed per GB-hour
